Your English Speaking Electrician in the Algarve
The Algarve is home to one of Europe's largest expat communities — with thousands of British, Irish, Dutch and German residents settled across Faro , Albufeira , Vilamoura , Lagos and beyond. Finding a reliable, English-speaking tradesman in Portugal is one of the biggest frustrations expats face. We solve that completely.
Whether you need an emergency electrician near you in the Algarve, a full villa rewire , solar panel installation or an Alojamento Local certificate — our DGEG certified electricians handle every job across the entire region, communicated entirely in English throughout.
Algarve properties — particularly older villas and apartments built before the 1990s — often carry outdated electrical systems that need upgrading before a sale, rental licence or renovation. We provide all electrical inspection certificates required by Portuguese law, including pre-purchase inspection reports and Alojamento Local compliance certificates — all handled in English.
Common Electrical Problems in Algarve Villas and Properties
Expats and homeowners across the Algarve call us every day with these exact situations. If something's not working in your villa or apartment, describe what you're seeing — we'll tell you what it is and get someone to you fast.
Lights, Switches and Outdoor Electrics Not Working
If you're searching for an electrician near me in the Algarve, you've found us. The most common calls we receive are for lights that have stopped working — a ceiling light that's gone dead, LED downlights or spotlights that have gone out, lights flickering or flashing on and off, a dimmer switch that's stopped responding, or an entire room with no electricity and no power to any of the bulbs. We also deal regularly with light switches that simply don't work — a switch that does nothing when pressed, a switch that feels spongy or loose, a two-way switch where one works and one doesn't, or a switch that only responds intermittently. In older Algarve villas these faults are usually caused by loose wiring behind the switch rather than a failed switch itself, so replacing the switch rarely solves the problem. Ceiling fans are another common call — a ceiling fan that's stopped working, a fan that spins slowly or not at all, a fan making a grinding, clicking or humming noise, or a fan that wobbles on the ceiling. We also get regular calls for outdoor, garden and terrace lights not working — terrace lights gone dead, balcony lighting failed, exterior wall lights not coming on, security lights that no longer trigger, PIR motion sensor lights that stay on permanently or won't activate, and pool lights that have stopped working. Salt air and intense heat in the Algarve are hard on external fittings and wiring, and what looks like a dead light is often a corroded connection or failed junction box rather than a failed bulb.

Electric Gate Faults and Motor Repairs
Electric gates are one of the most urgent calls we receive across the Algarve — and one of the most disruptive when they fail. A gate that won't open or close, a gate motor that has stopped responding, a remote control that no longer works, a gate stuck open after a power cut, or a gate that opens but won't close again all leave your property either inaccessible or unsecured. We also regularly deal with gate intercoms that have failed, video intercoms with no image or sound, gate motors making grinding or clicking noises, gates that move erratically or stop mid-cycle, and solar-powered gate systems where the battery or controller has failed. In the Algarve, electric gates take a significant beating from extreme summer heat, salt air corrosion, and power surges during storms — and many of the gate systems on older villas and private estates haven't been properly serviced in years. Whether your gate has completely stopped working or is showing early warning signs, we diagnose and repair all makes and models of electric gate motors across the entire Algarve.

Dead Sockets, Bathroom Faults and Intercom Problems
Plug sockets and power points that have stopped working are among the most common faults we fix. A socket that's gone dead, a plug point that nothing will charge from, a sparking socket when you plug something in, a socket that feels warm or hot to the touch, or one with visible burn marks or discolouration — these all need immediate attention. A dead socket in a Portuguese property isn't always a tripped fuse — it can be a failed outlet, a loose neutral wire behind the wall, or a wiring fault that leaves the socket appearing dead while still being live. Doorbells and intercoms not working are also a regular call — a doorbell that produces no sound, a video doorbell with no power, or a wired intercom that's stopped functioning. Bathroom electrical faults are extremely common in older Algarve properties — a bathroom light that trips when switched on, a bathroom socket that's dead, an extractor fan that's failed or runs constantly, or moisture getting into fittings near showers or baths. Older Portuguese bathrooms frequently have non-compliant electrics near water sources, and damp conditions accelerate wiring deterioration quickly. If any socket feels hot or has scorch marks anywhere in the property, stop using it and call us immediately.

Fuse Box Tripping, Power Surges and AC Problems
Fuse boxes that keep tripping are something we deal with daily across Faro , Albufeira , Lagos , Portimão , Tavira and every corner of the Algarve. If your fuse board keeps switching off, a breaker keeps flipping, the electrics have tripped, the RCD won't stay on, you've blown a fuse, or you've lost electricity to one room or to the whole property — the cause is usually an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance drawing too much current, or deteriorated wiring causing a short. Power surges are particularly common in the Algarve, especially in rural properties and after storms — you may notice lights going off momentarily, appliances resetting for no reason, or clocks flashing after a brief power cut. Related to this, power sags or dips — where lights briefly dim every time the fridge kicks in, the pool pump starts, or the air conditioning comes on — usually indicate an undersized electrical supply struggling under modern load. AC tripping the fuse box is one of the most frequent summer calls we receive, and is almost always solved with a dedicated circuit upgrade. Electric water heaters not working are another common fault — no hot water, the water heater tripping the electrics, or a boiler that keeps cutting out are all electrical issues we diagnose and fix. We identify the exact cause and fix it properly, with all work certified to current Portuguese standards.

Burning Smells, Exposed Wiring and Electrical Emergencies
If you notice a burning smell from a socket , plug, wall or ceiling, hear buzzing or crackling from a socket, switch or fuse board, or receive even a mild electric shock from a plug or appliance — treat it as an emergency. A burning smell from electrics means something is already overheating, and in an Algarve villa with older wiring that can escalate fast. Visibly damaged or exposed wiring is another warning sign we see regularly in older properties — burnt or discoloured cables, wires coming out of walls or ceilings, uncovered junction boxes left open after previous renovation work. These are never safe to leave. An unexpectedly high electricity bill that you can't explain is often a symptom of a wiring fault rather than a usage problem — a leaking circuit, a failing appliance drawing excessive current, or degraded insulation all cause invisible electricity drain. If you're looking to reduce those bills, our solar panels cut energy costs by 60–80%. Storage heaters or panel heaters not working, EV chargers that have stopped charging or won't communicate with the car, and smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors beeping or not functioning are all electrical faults we investigate and fix. We cover the entire Algarve for emergency electrical faults — same day during working hours, overnight every day of the week.

Buying or Moving Into an Algarve Property
We also regularly help expats who have just moved into a Portuguese property and aren't sure if the wiring is safe — or who have no electricity and don't know where to start. Many Algarve villas built before the 1990s lack RCD protection, have undersized consumer units, aluminium wiring, or a fuse blown somewhere in a system nobody has looked at in years — none of which meet current Portuguese electrical regulations. If you're buying a villa in the Algarve and need a pre-purchase electrical inspection, renting your property as an Alojamento Local and need your compliance certificate, or your property needs a complete villa rewire to bring it up to current Portuguese standards — we carry out full electrical inspection reports in English across the entire Algarve, giving you a clear, plain-English picture of exactly what you're dealing with and what needs to change.
Not sure what the problem is? Call us and describe what you're seeing — we'll diagnose it over the phone and get someone to you fast.
